LIFE4FARMS - Innovative nature-based solutions for the elimination of nutrients and veterinary pharmaceuticals from livestock agricultural runoff
The LIFE4FARMS project develops and demonstrates innovative Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for the treatment of wastewater and runoff from livestock farms, aiming to reduce loads of nutrients, veterinary pharmaceutical residues, pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes.
The Wet4Agro solution, based on the integration of drainage systems, innovative substrates and constructed wetlands, will be demonstrated through three full-scale prototypes in the Czech Republic and the Azores, supporting its subsequent replication in other agricultural contexts.
The project will assess the environmental and economic performance of the proposed solutions, with particular attention to their potential to reduce pollution, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional treatment approaches.
LIFE4FARMS will also develop tools and methodologies to support the design, monitoring and replication of NBS in livestock farming contexts, contributing to more sustainable water management and improved protection of water resources in agricultural areas.
The project is coordinated by Technical University of Liberec (TUL), and involves numerous international partners, including CESKA ZEMEDELSKA UNIVERZITA V PRAZE, DEKONTA AS, AARHUS UNIVERSITET, IRIDRA SRL, Finançor Agro Alimentar S.A., Provipor - Produção de Alimentos para Animais, Lda, FUNDACAO GASPAR FRUTUOSO.
The project, funded under the LIFE programme (LIFE-2025-SAP-ENV, Grant Agreement No. 101294964), started in September 2026 and will end in August 2030, for a total duration of 48 months, with a total budget of € 2,595,064.00, and a European Commission contribution of € 1,557,038.00.
